Tree Planting & Community Support at Mukutani Forest
On 29th August 2025, Global Ark Initiative – Kenya (GAI), in partnership with the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) led by the Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr. Alex Lemarkoko, successfully planted 6,000 indigenous and climate-resilient tree species at Mukutani Forest.
Among the trees planted was the Tamarind indica, locally known as Mkwaju in Swahili and Loisichoi in Ilchamus. This species is highly valued for its nutritional benefits, being rich in fibre and Vitamin C, making it not only an environmental asset but also a community health resource.
As part of the day’s activities, the program included a visit to the Mukutani IDP camp, home to families who have returned after displacement caused by past bandit attacks. Their return has been made possible by the realized peace, largely supported by the establishment of the forest and the presence of KFS, KDF, and other security agencies.
In collaboration with Kenya Forest Service CSR initiative, the Youth Senate,Kenya and Speak Truth Africa Organization, food items were distributed to the IDPs under the Nutrition Support Program (NSP), reaching out to members of the Ilchamus and Pokot communities residing in the area.
The GAI team led by Mr. Haron Lepasio, Programme Coordinator, representing the Executive Director, Mr. Gabriel Lesinya appreciated the communities for their peaceful coexistence and encouraged them to continue embracing environmental conservation as a pillar for sustainable development. Mr. Lepasio also highlighted the challenges still facing the IDPs, noting that despite their resilience, they continue to live in tents that expose them to harsh weather, and struggle with limited food support, inadequate education facilities, and poor access to medical services.
The CCF, Kenya Forest Service Mr. Lemarkoko in his address commended the communities for living in harmony despite past challenges, noting that unity, resilience, and conservation remain the true pillars of progress.
🌱 Global Ark Initiative remains committed to building resilient communities, restoring nature, and fostering peace.
